A Gift from His Holiness to the people of Australia
In 1989, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and with part of the prize money he received, His Holiness brought seeds of fruit bearing trees, blessed them and then distributed them to people representing various regions in all the continents of the world.
The 20th anniversary of His Holiness receiving the Prize falls on the 10th December, and in honour of this occasion, His Holiness would like to offer a gift of a packet of seeds blessed by him, to all those Australian's he connects with during his visit here in December.
In consultation with Greening Australia, the seeds being offered are suitable for the local areas His Holiness will be visiting and include Acacia pycnantha or Wattle (Victoria's flower symbol -traditionally these seeds were ground up for cooking damper) for Victorian's and for the people of Tasmania, Yellow Bottlebrush (Callistemon pallidus) which grows to 3 metres and blooms lemon yellow flowers in Spring. The flowers can be spectacular and are irresistible to nectar-feeding birds and insects.
Capillipedium parviflorum is the choice for NSW. This is an Australian native Grass found up and down the east coast of Australia and has a mild lemon scent. When considering the environment and land based ecosystems, the focus is generally on trees. Trees, while immensely important, are but one aspect of a complex series of interrelationships between shrubs, groundcovers and animals that together support resilient and sustainable native ecosystems. An often forgotten, yet critically important aspect of native forests is the ground cover. The grasses and ground cover slow the run-off of water, stabilise the soil and reduce erosion and provide shelter and food for many animals from bandicoots through to small birds. His Holiness has stated, "we humans are the only species with the power to destroy the earth as we know it. The birds have no such power, nor do the insects, nor does any mammal. Yet if we have the capacity to destroy the earth, so, too, do we have the capacity to protect it."
And in association with Diggers, (Australia's largest garden club www.diggers.com.au), 50 lucky people will receive a free Commemorative, His Holiness the Dalai Lama "Our Future, Who is Responsible?" fruit tree to plant in their local community. Further details provided on the seed packets which will be given out at each event.
So please join us at one of the many talks or teachings His Holiness will be giving during his visit in December and help celebrate this auspicious 20th anniversary with His Holiness and contribute towards a greener Australia.
The Dalai Lama visited Australia Zoo on the SunshineCoast and Brisbane in Queensland as part of his 11 day, eight city tour of Australia in 2007.
Australia Zoo has a long standing relationship with His Holiness’ personal monastery in Dharamsala, and several of the monks have visited the Zoo in the past.
